COMPTEL PLUS, the annual gathering of competitive carriers and their ecosystem, took place this week in Las Vegas at the Aria Resort and Casino. I always look forward to the Light Reading Ethernet Expo in New York. The city and the staff of Light Reading deserve a lot of credit for pulling off this event a week after super storm Sandy. And people were excited to be at the event because there was a lot to discuss and debate. There has been a lot of change since last November, with the introduction of Carrier Ethernet 2.0 and the rise of Software Defined Networking (SDN), and the most interesting ideas centered on their relevance to the cloud.

Carrier Ethernet is more flexible. Service providers typically install lines into customer premises that can deliver as much as 10Gbps of bandwidth, but generally, customers provision far less. But later, upgrades are easy to do, for all that's needed is a reconfiguring of network equipment. And this takes only a few days, at most, versus the weeks often required to modify a TDM-based network.

Last week, my company, Overture, had the honor of sponsoring and participating in two incredibly well-organized Carrier Ethernet Seminars put on by the MEF. These were our third and fouth such events with the MEF and they were held in Bogota, Colombia and Santiago, Chile. The MEF hold these educational seminars periodically around the world, with a particular emphasis on Latin American region where it hopes to build-up its nascent membership base. The audience of nearly 120 at each event were very engaged and were treated to a full-day of material and sustenance.
