The who’s who of Carrier Ethernet Europe gathered last week in Munich for the annual Light Reading Ethernet Europe. Collocated with the MEF’s quarterly members’ meeting, this year’s event lived up to its billing as the premier Carrier Ethernet event in EMEA.
My schedule only allowed for a couple of brief visits into town which naturally included the requisite visit to the legendary Hofbrauhaus, for a few um-pa-pa’s, a very large stein of beer and some rockin’ pretzels.

With Carrier Ethernet 2.0 certification set to begin in Q2, the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) specification is poised to take the Ethernet world by storm. Study: Small cell market to hit $2B by 2016, driven by capacity needs

Operators looking to improve mobile broadband coverage and capacity will drive the small cell market in the years ahead, with three million small cells being shipped by 2016, valuing the market at $2.1 billion (€1.58 billion), according to a new year-long study conducted by Infonetics Research. Alcatel-Lucent's 9363 Urban Metro Cell at the Gare du Nord train station in Paris. Deutsche Telekom, Huawei and NTT are all shouting loudly about their latest optical transmission developments. Over in Japan, the R&D team at NTT are excited about "an optical amplification technology that provides inexpensive wide dynamic range optical amplifiers and can handle burst signals generated in Ethernet PON systems." The result is the ability to offer 10Gbit/s services over access networks at up to 100 km. NTT will be presenting its findings at OFC/NFOEC on Thursday March 8. (See NTT Trials 10G PON at 100km.)

Vendors are broadly agreed that integrated wifi will be an essential element in any small cell strategy, although there is little consensus when it comes to the choice of backhaul technology. Differentiation meanwhile is building around the various deployment strategies, and the management and co-ordination of small cell deployments in the macro network environment. And while the large OEMs are stressing the importance of end-to-end capabilities, opportunities still exist for smaller providers from small cell developers to integrated software, network optimization and backhaul suppliers.
