Congrats Vodafone, but heed Groucho Marx

It’s about time for a shakeup. And for a mere £1 billion (US$1.7 billion) in cash, Vodafone may pull it off. If successful, its bid for Cable & Wireless Worldwide creates nothing less than a new top-tier player in the global enterprise telecoms market. Not least, Vodafone’s move underscores a truth that mobile network operators [...]

Hong Kong Broadband Network: “For us, speed is always the first priority”

The Hong Kong Broadband Network is one of the FTTH leaders in Hong Kong and our core technologies are Metro Ethernet and GPON. The HKBN launched a 100Mb service to the general public as far back as 2005 and a 1GB service in 2008. In future, we’ll mainly engage in GPON network for our FTTH service. I think FTTH is the future.

MWC surprises with signs of a positive vibe

Vendors are broadly agreed that integrated wifi will be an essential element in any small cell strategy, although there is little consensus when it comes to the choice of backhaul technology. Differentiation meanwhile is building around the various deployment strategies, and the management and co-ordination of small cell deployments in the macro network environment. And while the large OEMs are stressing the importance of end-to-end capabilities, opportunities still exist for smaller providers from small cell developers to integrated software, network optimization and backhaul suppliers.

      Differentiating in a dynamic world

“Technology is one of the drivers of this business model–Ethernet and backhaul is a pre requisite–and the upgrades around 4G are more difficult than operators expect. They may know network deployment but this is not just another network deployment,” Bultema says.

Network Sharing: Improving the medium so the message is not lost

Way back in 1996, at the dawn of the digital revolution, Microsoft founder Bill Gates declared in an article that “Content is King.” Gates drew a parallel to television, saying that “The television revolution that began half a century ago spawned a number of industries, including the manufacturing of TV sets, but the long-term winners were those who used the medium to deliver information and entertainment.” This statement has proved prophetic.
