      Clouds Gather Over Ethernet Europe

There's no sunshine in Munich this week, but that's OK with Ethernet Europe folks, who are mostly interested in clouds anyway.  Ethernet's role in enabling new cloud services ecosystems is a major feature of the first day of the annual event, which moved this year to Munich, in advance of the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) meeting later this week. Four separate service provider keynotes and two panels will address the potential of cloud services but also the challenges in creating an on-demand network infrastructure to enable this next generation of services.

4G (Finally) Starting to Boost US Capex Spend?

2012 could be the first year of all the major operators 'aggressively spending' as LTE deployments grow, Jefferies analyst suggests in new research.  LTE is the focus of much of the spending for the operators. Notter suggests that AT&T is predicted to increase LTE spend up to two times this year, with a corresponding spend on Ethernet cell-site backhaul expected. The operator may cut back on its 3G spend as it turns on more 4G.

      Telco Giants Boast Optical Breakthroughs

Deutsche Telekom, Huawei and NTT are all shouting loudly about their latest optical transmission developments.  Over in Japan, the R&D team at NTT are excited about "an optical amplification technology that provides inexpensive wide dynamic range optical amplifiers and can handle burst signals generated in Ethernet PON systems." The result is the ability to offer 10Gbit/s services over access networks at up to 100 km. NTT will be presenting its findings at OFC/NFOEC on Thursday March 8. (See NTT Trials 10G PON at 100km.)

Carriers Want 100G Everywhere An Infonetics survey suggests the optical 40G craze will be short-lived, as expected. The study confirmed that 40Gbit/s is being viewed as a stopgap, something to be replaced by 100Gbit/s once the latter is more widely available. Schmitt has been arguing for a couple of years that the 40Gbit/s generation will be a short one. (Read Full Article)
